A Visit with the Huz: the inside scoop on the inside scoop on Myra Johnson

Today I'd like to introduce you to Jack Johnson, husband of author Myra Johnson.

Myra Johnson is the author of One Imperfect Christmas; Gateway Weddings (anthology including Heartsong Presents novels Autumn Rains, Romance by the Book, and Where the Dogwoods Bloom); A Horseman’s Heart; and A Horseman’s Gift. Coming in January: A Horseman’s Hope. You may visit her website at www.MyraJohnson.com.

Jack, thank you for stopping by!

Where did you meet Myra and how long have you been married?

Myra and I met while we were both working for the telephone company in McAllen, Texas.  We have been married 40 years. We have two married daughters and six grandchildren.

Who lives at home with you (children, pets, other)?

The two of us, plus two dogs.

Did you know Myra was a writer before you were married?

At the time we dated and married, Myra was working elsewhere and was not into writing as a vocation. She first got serious about writing in 1983 and sold her first short story in 1985.

What is your occupation and how long have you been working at that vocation?

Retired from AT&T in 2002 (30 years ) and continued in telecommunications for another 10 years (total of 40). For the past year I have been substitute teaching at a Christian school in between working on projects around the house.

What are a few of your favorite books and authors? (Not including your wife's.)

The Shack, The River, anything by Clive Cussler, W.E. B Griffin, and Dale Brown.

Have you ever read any of your wife's books?  If so, do you have a favorite?

I have read them all.  I really enjoy the Historical Romance category and the research involved. My favorite is When The Clouds Roll By, the first of the Till We Meet Again Series to be published by Abingdon Press. Book one is scheduled for release October 2013.

Where does Myra write?

In her office upstairs.

What does she wear when writing?

Shorts, sweats, most anything very casual.

Is there anything unusual that she ever asks you to do relating to her writing?

Probably not unusual, but I go to most book signings, etc., along with getting into the historical research.

What activities do the two of you enjoy doing together as a couple?

Church choir, church handbell choir, going to movies, eating out

Now, from Myra:

Does your husband write? If so, please tells us about it.

LOL! My husband “writes” email to his countless cousins and fraternity alumni.

As an author, what is something exceptional that you appreciate about your husband relating to his support of your career.

I think it’s quite exceptional that he is finally learning to cook simple meals for supper, which allows me an extra hour or so of writing time every afternoon! He’s also pretty much taken over the grocery shopping and other errands. I also greatly appreciate having him accompany me to author events, mainly for the moral support but also for helping me navigate to unfamiliar locations and toting my books and giveaways.

Thank you Jack & Myra for joining us at WTD!

  4. When Ivan and I went to Dallas we seriously debated whether I could have managed on my own. I mean I suppose I could have but I had so much junk to carry to that conference I really worked him hard.
And he really doesn't care for where we stayed in Dallas, very barren out there by the airport so he doesn't want to go again...which is why we tried to figure out if I could get everything hauled there on my own.

    1. I didn't care much for the airport hotel either. But those guys can have fun anywhere, once they set their minds to it. ;-)

  5. Welcome Seekers! So glad to see you all here. Myra sure has a gem of a huz in Jack. He does the grocery shopping and cooks! That's awesome. My huz helps me that way too and those time saving chores really make a difference. For me just knowing I don't have to cook that meal keeps me focused for longer as I write. It's awesome to have a supportive huz around.

  6. Oh, Myra, how FUN to see an interview with Jack!! I think it's SO cool that Jack reads all your books!! Keith reads mine too, but I cannot get my son -- the sports fanatic -- to read them even when I dedicated one to him and made the hero a sports-lover and athlete!! The only thing he reads is the sports page and listens to audio books. Just yesterday I received sample audio copies of A Love Surrendered and Keith laughed and said, "Oh, you should wrap one up and give it to Matt for Christmas," which I think I will do, just to see his face ...

    LOVE these Huz interviews, Carla!!

    Hugs,
    Julie

    1. There was a time years ago when Jack didn't read ANYTHING but work stuff. With all those telephone engineering documents and procedure manuals, he was brain-dead by the time he got home from the office. Then several years ago when he was visiting his dad, his dad gave him a Tom Clancy novel, Hunt for Red October. He hasn't stopped reading novels since!

  8. Thanks for giving us the insight into the husband's viewpoint of the writing life. My husband is also supportive and will do a few kitchen things like washing all the dishes. I recently taught him how to make Krispie Treats but he's not a Meal Cook. Maybe in time that will come. He does know how to make meatloaf six pounds at a time.
