What a Headache

I'm a migraineur, as some of you know. Sounds so fancy, but believe me there is nothing fancy about it.  A little bit about the -eur suffix: it occurs regularly in occupation names as in restaurateur, coiffeur, chauffeur.  Therefore, I'm a migraineur because I'm excellent at it.  I am occupied with it. . . all too often.

My chronic migraines have been increasing again, primarily because of the winter weather, so after spending about four days in migraine I have become a bit discouraged from the time it robs me of as I lay recuperating.  It makes me feel like a flaneur:  one who strolls about aimlessly, a lounger and I'm getting tired of playing catch up from all the unproductive time when typically I am such a travailleur:  one who works dilligently.

I'm regularly occupied as a part-time administrator for a literacy organization and am also a website developer - an entrepreneur: one who organizes and manages an enterprise.  Some even consider me a connoisseur:  a skillful or knowing person.  Yet, I am oft times simply a douceur: one who lends the gift of service for projects at various times in the role of conference planner, designer, desktop publisher, Bible Study teacher and literacy volunteer tutor. But, I have had to diminish the quantity of time I can spend doing these things due to the fact that I am a migraineur.

My passion, howeveur (LOL), is what I fear I am missing the most.  I am a litteratuer: one who occupies herself with literature.  I don't want to forever be considered an amateur: persuing an art non-professionally, as I am quite serious about my goal to become a raconteur: a storyteller.  I am a writeur, you see, as well as a migraineur. And the two are not at all compatible.

What gets in the way of your writing?

  1. Third time's a charm, as they say! I've been having trouble with blogger for some reason... Thanks for such a thoughtful, honest post. You've been on my mind and heart and I hope you are feeling better. Being sick really steals my writing joy away, too. That and the doldrums. Hope you're free of both. Praying for you!

  2. This is my first visit to your blog and I love it already. Migraines are absolutely devestating (along with a million and one other things) to my "prose."
I can so relate to your post. Looking forward to reading more.
    God bless!

  4. I'm so sorry about your migraines! I get them, though not as often as I used to...thank goodness! My kids are prone to them too...who knew they were genetic! For me, my day job gets in the way of my writing, stealing my energy and creativity. Sad, but it is a fact of life at this point in my life.

  5. Cute, cute post! But not the reason for them. I can relate, I can commiserate. Migraines are debilitating, and I hate that I have an up-close and personal relationship with them.

I don't want to seem presumptuous, because you're already aware of what works and doesn't as treatment for you, I'm sure, but have you checked into potassium supplements? I've added them to my maintenance treatment, and it's gotten rid of all my day-to-day pain. (Still trying to get my one or two monthlies under control.)

Praying for your relief! And balance, too, with all else life has going for you.

And PS... sorry for such a long comment... My husband likes a band call the Raconteurs, and I love that it means storytellers! Very cool.

  6. Sorry you weren't feeling well. I allow interruptions to sidetrack me from writing. Procrastination can play a part in it too. But I am getting better:)

  10. I'm so blessed by all your concern. And so many of you can relate, as fellow migraineurs. Yes, they are genetic. My grandmother and mother had them and one of my sons has them. Given that, it would seem that someone might come up with a cure someday, at least that is what I hope. It's interesting how our bodies respond to the weather this way - headaches, bodyaches, even mood. For any who may wonder, I take Imitrex and also have a regimen of Feverfew,Magnesium, and decongestants. Caffiene is another trick I have up my sleeve as it helps with the dilation of blood vessels which is a primary cause of migraine.

Janna, I might have to add Potasium to the list.Thank you for the suggestion.

I've also discovered that I'm sensitive to tyramine, found in two of my favorite foods - cheese and pickled herring. My grandmother could not tolerate chocolate and I am most thankful that is not the case for me! The weather (change in barometric pressure) is the biggest trigger for me, and also post stress which seems to send a surge of hormones/chemicals.

Enough on that. It's enough to give me a headache!

  11. Thank you all for your prayers! How I appreciate it. And this also gives us an opportunity to pray specifically for one another be it for our migraines, illness, doldrums, job stress, procrastination (which I am also subject to!), keeping life in balance, and our writing in general.

  14. I'm sorry to hear you've not been feeling well. There is nothing more frustrating than a physical ailment keeping you from what you love to do. I should know. I suppose I am a....shoulder acheur..... ;)

  15. Oh, Carla, I can empathize. With all the snow we've had this week, I had a migraine for a couple of days. The barometric pressure also affects me.

I find it takes two triggers in any combination: stress, chocolate, bad weather, too much or not enough sleep, and waiting too long to eat a meal. This is by no means a complete list.

None of the migraine meds work for me. Beta blockers have reduced the number of headaches and the severity.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  16. Oh Carla, there's nothing that zaps the strength out of a body than a headache. I've only had the regular kind and I can't begin to imagine what a full blown migraine really feels like. I have a friend who suffers from them though and I can see how debilitating they are. And still you manage to do so much!!!!
